The F-150 we’ve been waiting for has arrived. The 3.5L EcoBoost engine now comes with a 10-speed transmission! Great, right? But what does that mean to you? It means 6 percent higher city and 11 percent higher combined EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings than the previous generation’s 3.5L EcoBoost. It also means 12 percent better power-to-weight ratio compared to the first generation.
The new 10-speed transmission delivers improved acceleration and performance compared with previous six-speed automatic transmissions, thanks to optimized wide-span gear spacing, coupled with drag-reduction actions. Three overdrive gears and a wider ratio span help improve fuel efficiency at highway speeds, while maintaining F-150’s best-in-class towing. The 10-speed transmission uses advanced materials and alloys to save weight, which translates into enhanced shifting performance. With the 10-speed’s smaller steps between gear ratios, the engine speed is kept lower. Acceleration is easy and clean allowing you to avoid dipping too far into the throttle in normal driving, which should improve real-world fuel economy.
There’s some pretty clever software happening behind the scenes that keep the transmissions multitude of gears from feeling juddery when trying to keep pace with a driver’s braking while downshifting. The same thing applies to part-throttle acceleration. Instead of running through all ten gears sequentially, the computer skips gears, typically starting in first before jumping to third, then fifth, and then going quickly gear to gear (sixth, seventh, eighth, etc.) as the driver eases off the gas pedal upon reaching the desired road speed. However, under a wide-open-throttle, the transmission winds out each gear all the way. Basically, floor the accelerator, and the transmission clicks off clean, firm shifts about 400 rpm shy of the indicated redline.
Ford calls this EcoBoost “all new,” and indeed it carries over only the old engine’s bore center dimension, piston displacement, and cylinder liners. The block is new, the turbos are new, the cooling system (which features new flow paths and a higher-volume, higher-rate water pump) is new, and the fuel-delivery system now employs both direct and port injectors for improved emissions and more power.
A highly effective 10-step program, to say the least. And Automax Ford has a huge selection of these new F-150’s ready to get to work!
